Brian Davies gave up soldiering with the Black Watch for a flight that lasted more than twenty years. His crusade-which exposed him to illness, violence, exile, jail and even an attempt on his life-was against the wholesale and brutal clubbing to death of thousands of seal pups in the frozen wastes of Canada.
Prized for their soft white pelts, the astonishingly appealing pups become 'raggedy-jackets' within a few days of life. And the annual harvest literally turned the ice red with their blood.
Outmanoeuvring the warped legislation and underhand tactics of his foes who consistently bent or invented the rules, Davies finally triumphed when he persuaded the European Parliament to call a halt to one of the world's cruellest trades.
But now the seal killers are back, and he must continue the fight to spare innocent lives from slaughter.
