Description
Focusing on the mid-1950s, this thesis argues that the history of the TVA reflected unique postwar circumstances as well as ancient and recent vegetarian traditions. A comparative history of vegetarianism reveals that it has never solely been an issue of diet. It has always entailed a broad ethic involving issues such as human health, purity of body and mind, compassion towards animals, moral conduct, concern for the natural environment, non-violence and peace among humans, and a holistic, non-dualistic worldview.
